Every year, local city and county schools host a contest to choose a
female student to represent their schools for the school year. When
the contestant wins their high school title, they then qualify to enter
the Cullman County Fair Pageant, where they compete for prizes, scholarships,
and the title of Miss Cullman County Fair Queen. The competition is
held at the fair grounds during fair week in September.
These contestants also qualify to compete against each other once again,
in October during Oktoberfest. The only Oktoberfest contestant that
is not chosen in this fashion is Miss St Bernard Prep. The teachers
and administrators from St Bernard school choose their school representative,
and she has the opportunity to participate in the Miss Oktoberfest too.
The Miss Oktoberfest is a very demanding and physical event. On the
day of the competition, The Burgermeister or Colonel Cullmann introduce
the contestants, one by one, and present them to the crowds. The competition
begins when a large plate of beautifully decorated cupcakes are presented
for viewing. Inside one of the cupcakes is an unbaked pretzel. The young
women are required to pick a cupcake, and then eat the cupcake until
one finds the pretzel. The winner, of course, is the one who finds the
pretzel.
Once Miss Oktoberfest receives her bouquet of flowers, her elegant
sash and her crown of flowers, she is whisked off to be fitted for traditional
German attire. For the rest of the Oktoberfest events, Miss Oktoberfest
assist the Burgermeister and Colonel Cullman as host and can even be
available for a polka dance or too.
So, come join Miss Oktoberfest, Colonel Cullman, and the Burgermeister
at the Festhalle for some traditional hometown fun, nightly at the Festhalle!
